Art Around Town: The Golden Thread Gallery

Golden Thread - Paint Out 1

“The invisible, underlying connection that weaves together the spirit of humanity – through the arts.” That’s the meaning behind the name of The Golden Thread Gallery. Unassumingly located in the Holy Family Retreat Center in West Hartford, this gallery exudes a sense of tranquility and community. I recently visited the space to talk with the founders and to learn more about their mission and programming.

Beyond the white gallery walls, co-founders Kate Wilson and Tricia Haggerty Wenz are giving back to both the artist community and the community at large. Through partnerships with organizations such as Community Solutions, located in the North East neighborhood of Hartford, the gallery is living out its mission through programming that impacts the people of Connecticut with the arts. A Community Paint Out event took place in late August that brought out volunteers, neighborhood adults and children, school teachers and artists.

When it comes to giving back to the artist community, the Golden Thread Gallery has developed a program called SPARK! Several artists have an opportunity to pitch a community art project to an audience of interested individuals. These individuals pay twenty dollars for a light dinner and the chance to participate as a member of the selection committee. Everyone votes on their favorite project and the artist with the most votes is awarded all proceeds collected that night. When non-profit organizations are always looking for sources of funding to maintain their programming, the founders feel great having an opportunity to present an artist with funding through SPARK! Artist and dinner attendees are always wanted. More information is available on their website: goldenthreadgallery.org

In the gallery they are connecting multiple artistic disciplines in their latest exhibition, Tree of Life. Poets are being invited into the gallery to spend time with the artwork and muster up any inspiration they may find to write a poem. For the first time, Golden Thread will hold a closing reception where two poets will be selected to read their exhibition-inspired poems. Poems are being accepted through January 4, 2016. You can find more about the call for poets on their website or on social media. The Golden Thread Gallery is on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

I have been to several exhibits and receptions. The Golden Thread Gallery is a beautiful, intimate space. The artworks I have seen are high quality and inspiring. Besides the events at their space, they are doing great work bringing art and art making to the community. I am looking forward to the next reception and hearing poets perform works inspired by the artwork currently in Tree of Life.
